Football Season

I am a Longhorn. Hubbie is an Aggie…. with season tickets and NEVER misses a home game. This year, our college rivalry football game over the Thanksgiving weekend returns after a thirteen year hiatus.

When we lived in Dallas, it was a quick three hour drive to Kyle Field. From Midland, it’s eight long hours and two hotel stays.

Long car rides can be grueling on the body. My lower back cramps up and my hamstrings like to play tug of war with the rest of my body. I trade off driving with Hubbie to share the burden of hours behind the wheel, but the only way to provide relief is to get out of the car and move.

EXTENSION movements are key to relieve my body. Reaching up to the sky, Side bends, Swans.

Popular belief is to bend over to stretch the back of your legs - however, you are going deeper into flexion. If you are scrunched over and bent up in the car (or a desk) - the opposite movement will serve you better.

If sitting - stand and raise your arms.

If hunched over looking at phone - open your arms wide and breathe deeply into your chest.

If you legs are tight, try a plank and growing taller.

It doesn’t have to be a long exercise session or require a mat. Find a rest stop to walk or stretch up and back while getting gas.

Yes, we often push ourselves when driving long distance, but our bodies pay the price. Take a little extra time on the road so you don’t feel sore and achy on the other side.

I love tailgating and watching the game. I don’t want my body aching and ruining game day.

I’ll cheer the Aggies on with a bright spirit because I took the time for self-care.

And on Thanksgiving, I’ll be the one wearing my burnt orange in the midst of a sea of maroon
