Frequently Asked Questions

What is Traditional Pilates?

Pilates is a system of over 600 exercises created by Joseph Pilates with the philosophy of achieving good health means using the entire mind, body and spirit.  His exercises are considered the predecessor of Functional Movement.

There are many variations of Joe’s original work - all of which can be fun and physically challenging.

Traditional Pilates uses the model of assessment, the corrective and the reassessment during every workout.

In private lessons: Rather than a canned list of exercises or focusing on a particular body part - the traditional Pilates practise meets the body where it is TODAY.

Why is NCPT certification important for a Pilates teacher?

Being nationally certified means a teacher has set standards for professional competency necessary to safely and effectively teach the Pilates method to everybody.

  1. To award a credential to those who have provided evidence that they meet established professional standards.

  2. Develop and maintain fair third-party certification exams which meet NCCA standards and reflect current practice through updates and psychometric analysis.

  3. Establish guidelines for continuing education courses which encourage ongoing professional growth for certified teachers.

  4. Bettina encourages all clients to ask their Pilates teachers. How did you train and where? What certifications do you hold?

What Pilates equipment does Bett Pilates use?

The studio’s equipment is from Balanced Body and was purchased in 2023. They are considered medical equipment.

The Reformer and Tower, Wunda Chair, Box, Spine Corrector, Small Barrel, Magic Circles, Balls and the Foot Corrector.  Bettina has been comprehensively trained to safely guide you through all of the Pilates apparatus.  Due to space constraints of Bett’s studio, it does not have a Ladder Barrel, Cadillac, Armchair or Pedi Pull… yet!

Isn’t Pilates just for dancers?

No. Many injured dancers turned to Pilates after physical therapy failed to fully return them to the ballet/dance world.  They came to rehab and stayed for the full body strengthening. Pilates is for everyone.

 I’m in my golden years/ a man/ a teenager/ pregnant/ not fit / not flexible / overweight. Can I do Pilates?

Absolutely!!!  Pilates is a low/no impact system of exercises.  All bodies are different.  Bettina is a comprehensively trained teacher and has been trained how to specifically guide your body to improvement.

I have disc issues/ osteoporosis /recovering from broken bones/ torn tissues. Can I do Pilates?

As long as you have clearance from your doctor or physical/occupational therapist to engage in full body strength training - we can work together. Safety, both yours and mine, will always be my first focus.

While I can’t see into your body like an x-ray, your body reveals so much through basic movements.  I assess what your body is saying every time you visit.  Together, we can work toward your goals.

Can Pilates help me lose weight?

Bettina hates this question because until 2012 - she was carrying an extra 100 lbs. She lost her weight through diet and gastric bypass.

The answer to the weight loss question is - maybe, but probably not.

Pilates most likely will change your body shape as the focus is to strengthen and balance the body.

Bettina’s clients have said: I feel taller and stronger. My back and neck hurt less. I’m sleeping better. I’m calmer and less stressed.
